Sketch! Like Your Life Depends on it!
by Francis D.K. Ching
Introduction :
This was the first project for my semester two, a new experience on next level of drawing. Unlike what i did before, this project is fun and i found it interesting somehow. I learned how to sketch, hatch, think and even act like an architecture from this project and we were introduce to the architectural drawing too. Drawing, is a bridge of communication for architect, this is how we speak to the world !
Objective:
-to identify and expressive response to visual stimulation
-to apply basic principles and elements of design and drawing as language to visualize and to communicate ideas.
Learning Outcomes:
-recognize their potential, self-expression and visual awareness.
-identify the fundamental principles, elements and techniques in sketching, drawing, design process and presentation skills.
Submission Requirements:
a.) Body Parts
material used : charcoal pencil
b.)Object
material used : charcoal pencil
c.)Detail
material used : pencils
d.)Geometric Projection
material used : artline
e.)Tracing a Picture
material used : artline
f.)One Point Perspective
material used : artline
g.)Two Point Perspective
material used : pencils
h.)Artistic Representation
material used : mix
Reflection:
This project is fun and interesting for me, there are few hatching that i never used before and i forced myself to try for it.This is also my very first time experience to use charcoal pencil. Anyhow, i also learned new sketch such as one point and two point perspective. It was hard for me in the beginning to grab the perspective point but it's fun when i finally got through it. For the tracing part, I thought it is extremely annoying and hard but surprisingly it's fun and interesting! Although I spend like more than 12 hours producing the tracing picture again and again, I think it is worth for it.

Project 1B:
Measure, Draw and Diagram it!
Introduction:
In this project, we assigned to measure, draw and diagram our site that was chosen randomly by our lecturer, Ms. Delliya and Miss Norma. My group (B.I.G.) got the block A entrance for our site. We have to choose around 10m x 10m for our site.
Objective:
-to apply basic principles and elements of design
-visualize idea
-to demonstrate observation and visualization skills
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Identify the fundamental principles, elements and techniques in sketching, drawing, design process and presentation skills.
-Demonstrate observation skills and be able to record, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues via visual communications effectively.
-Manipulate variety of media and techniques to visualize ideas leading to a finish product
-Apply drawing as a means of communication in order to express two dimensional and three dimensional ideas.
Submission:
a.)cover (perspective)
b.)site plan
b.)site plan
c.)site elevation
d.)cross section
e.)site detail
f.)toy detail
g.)bubble diagram
h.)axonometric diagram
In this project, I had learned alot about measuring the every detail on my site so that i can provide a plan from all those measuring. At the beginning, we did measure everything we saw and record it on a piece of A3 paper which we think it is detail enough for a plan yet it's not. It took 7 or 8 times total measuring my site along with my group member. Since we all are rookies, we did contact each other time to time to confirm whether the measurement we record is correct or not. In addition, this project not only taught me about diagramming or measurement but also enclose the relationship between me and my group.
Project 2A:
Introduction to Site Analysis
Introduction:
Part A will introduce students to site investigations, case study and idea proposal. Students will investigate and prepare a presentation report on the site used in Project 1B. Students will also present a case study and idea proposal on substance related to Final Project. Students are then required to present this information to the class.
Objectives:
- To demonstrate observation and visualisation skills in a variety of ways depending on the area of specialisation being pursued with an emphasis on the process of drawing.
- To develop confidence to use drawing as a means of communication to express two dimensional and three dimensional ideas.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate observation skills and be able to record, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues via visual communications effectively.
- Manipulate variety of media and techniques to visualize ideas leading to a finish product.
Task:
a.)Location
a.)Location
b.)Site Context
c.)Size, Zoning and Legal
d.)Natural and Man Made Physical Features
e.)Circulation
f.)Utilities
g.)Sensory Perception
h.)Human, Culture and Activities
i.)Climate
j.)SWOT Analysis
k.)special observation
Reflection:
In this project, communication is a very important issue to keep the project running. We coop together to investigate, observe and analyse our site. The process of this project is fun but tiring. I also learned so basic site analysis skill to carry out the data which my group wan to present.
Project 2B:
Design Process and Proposal
Introduction:
The aim of the Final Project will be a review that illustrates the entire topic learned in this course subject. Students will undergo a “design process” to help them visualize their idea and they will present it in a systematic manner with visuals, drawings, sketches, diagrams, models etc.

Task:
- a mock up model of toy case
- layout of the presentation board
Reflection:
Due to communication problem, I didn't did well in this part of the project but I did learn something that every design have a process, I just have to go through it and keep on developing the idea so that i can carry my idea further.
Project 2C:
The Toy Display Presentation
Introduction:
Students are required to prepare presentation boards, model (prototype) and montage to convince the client of the proposed design. In this final part students are required to draw all the required illustration by hand and to creatively produce it on boards to demonstrate their basic skills of architectural drawings, architectural rendering and architectural graphics. They are also required to produce photomontage and model(s) to visualise the proposal.
Task:
- a completed model
- minimum 2 piece of A2 presentation board-One plan of the entrance wall with the proposed display (scale 1/50)
- The elevation(s) of the entranced wall (draw both wall if you are using both side of the wall (scale 1/50)
- One section through the entrance wall cutting through the display box and the wall (to show the height, and placement of the display box). (scale 1/50)
- One plan of display box (scale 1/1 or 1/2 or 1/3* consult lecturer)
- One top view of display box (scale 1/1 or 1/2 or 1/3* consult lecturer)
- Front, side and back elevation of display box (scale 1/1 or 1/2 or 1/3* consult lecturer)
- One section of the display box (scale 1/1 or 1/2 or 1/3* consult lecturer)
- One sketched perspective of the display on site or just the display box (one point or two point) - (should not be smaller than an A5 size it can be bigger)
- Design introduction, intention/concept and design process (sketches, diagrams and annotations)
- Some brief information about the site and suitable site analysis information
- a photo montage
Reflection:
Through out this project, I feels very tired but fun. I learned how to draw a object with plan, elevation and cross section. I also learned how to play with the scale when in scaled drawing. This project might look easy but since this is my first time then I felt that this project is quite challenging. I also encounter few problem such as insufficient time, problem gluing my box and etc but I manage to fix everything in time.
